Become An Official

Officials are very important to the effective functioning of Athletics SA. The primary role of Officials is to oversee Athletics SA competition by conducting events through the enforcement of the specific rules of the particular competition and the rules of the IAAF. Given the diversity of athletics, there are a large number of different roles and positions that are available to officials. Some require technical knowledge and experiences, whilst others are fairly basic and require limited understanding of athletics. For example, working in photo finish requires training, whereas raking a long jump pit obviously requires virtually no experience. In short, there is something for everyone, no matter your level of experience with athletics.

An extensive list with descriptions of the various roles available to Officials can be accessed HERE

Athletics SA Officials are generally volunteers. Athletics SA endeavours to support its Officials through the provision of meals during some competitions, providing recognition through awards at the conclusion of each season, and funding functions like end of season drinks.

Officiating within Athletics SA competition is flexible. Registered Officials can attend as many or as few events based on their circumstances. Even if you are only able to come to one or two events per year or help out once a month, there is an opportunity for you to be a part of the Athletics SA community.

Athletics SA officiating can provide many benefits including:
  • The opportunity to remain involved in athletics if a person is unable to compete
  • An opportunity to socialise with like-minded individuals
  • The ability to be involved in, and give back to, a community focussed organisation
  • Assist athletes to perform at their best and achieve their goals and dreams
  • The opportunity to officiate at Athletics Australia events, including National Championships
  • The ability to progress to International competition such as the Olympic Games for those with greater ambitions
